Description:

It has been more than a decade since the subprime crisis hit the world in the form a Financial Crisis. The crisis was the worst U.S. economic disaster since the Great Depression. In the United States, the stock market plummeted, unemployment climbed, and consequently the GDP growth recorded a severe dip. The crisis quickly spread to other countries through different transmission challenges resulting in a Global Financial crisis. The world’s decision makers responded to the crisis magnificently with coordinated policy actions such as takeovers of financial institutions, massive doses of bailouts and synchronized quantitative easing. A decade later the world has come back to the high growth trajectory. However, the risks remain elevated with a potential to create another crisis. This is evident from the IMF Global Financial Stability Report which opines that the overall financial stability risks remain high because political and policy uncertainty in advanced economies opens channels for negative spillovers. A sudden repricing of risk or a rise in protectionism could trigger capital outflows and hurt demand. This would exacerbate existing vulnerabilities in corporate sectors and raise risks in the weakest banking systems. It cautions that external threats emanating from tighter global financial conditions and increased trade protectionism could further affect corporate distress in some emerging economies and stress in the banking sector. It also cautions that the unhedged foreign currency borrowing of the corporate sector would put further pressure on the balance sheet. Particularly, the IMF warns that India, China, and South Africa would experience greatest deterioration in corporate balance sheets resulting in severe stress in the banking sector. With this backdrop, the present seminar aims at understanding the antecedents and aftermath of the global financial crisis and the recent challenges faced by the world economy and its impact on the Indian economy.
