The Politics & International Affairs Unit of ATINER organizes a Stream on “Ethnicity, Nationalism and Migration” as part of the 16th Annual International Conference on International Studies, 18-21 June 2018, Athens, Greece sponsored by the Athens Journal of Social Sciences. Current diplomatic affairs have allowed for new characters to surface. As nations’ borders appear to become more porous, new possibilities are growing. It is not the case that nation states are no longer the protagonists, but they are now allowing room for others. Nevertheless, what has been aided by telecommunications, economy and global culture has had important precedents. This is the specific case of the diasporas with their mother countries and the role they have played to consolidate their objectives. Minority or identity nationalisms are strongly linked to their diasporas and intensify the “Mother Country” discourse. Those who have had to migrate stay in close contact with the relatives who remain in their place of origin and a bond of affection with the place that witnessed their births. These groups quickly and in an almost natural and spontaneous way seek to join together as a means of preserving customs and traditions. Over time, leaders among them come to the fore seeking a more formal contact with the homeland they have left, generating a mechanism of feedback and mutual aid between the people here and there, and in the interests of both. These non-state diasporas and their agents can act as third parties in conflicts between their nationalities and their central governments, and they are more effective the more success they have in involving the states where they live in their interests. The more numerous, rich, powerful and influential this group is, the greater chance there is of achieving this. This stream is open to papers presenting case studies, as well as to theoretical approaches, with an interest in historical perspective as well as in contemporary contexts. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, a Mycanae and island of Poros visit, an Athens educational walking tour, an one-day visit to Delphi and an ancient Corinth and Cape Sounion visit. The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines. The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 400 International Conferences and other events, and has published close to 200 books.
