The seal in a system is often overlooked. Many complicated machines (an engine or oil drilling equipment) need seals to keep lubricated parts moving, to separate the internal mechanisms from harsh outer conditions and to overall ensure the function of the system as a whole. Strangely enough, seals are not thought of as a part of the whole but as a commodity to add to the machine – meaning it is often difficult for seal manufacturers to deliver a product at low price point that will withstand the necessary conditions. Furthermore, they are limited to certain types of materials that may not be ideal for the application, thus making mixing and designing new material compounds a very tricky and specific science.
