The Arts and Humanities Division (AHRD) of ATINER is organizing A Stream on The Status and Standing of Contemporary Consciousness, 3-6 January 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 5th Annual International Conference on Humanities & Arts in a Global World sponsored by theAthens Journal of Humanities & Arts. Roughly, the history of modernity is the path from plurality to subjectivity (or individuality). Famous lessons in this sense have been learned from Hegel and the arts and their corresponding historians. Individuality has become the stamp of modernity comprising the most important strands of philosophy from substantial Cartesian mind (the �I'), the perceiver and reflective person in sensualism, transcendental apperception (Kant) to subjectivity and absolute reason with Hegel. Where does the mankind stand today? After the linguistic shift, is it still the sole, solitary, the politically advanced person who eventually speaks, thinks and perceives, tells the truth, or invents and imagines situations, projects, machines, master plans or frameworks, finally works of art? Or has the situation taken a turn back into the cyclic history, so far regaining realms of collectivity and primordial �gatheredness'? If one wants to affirm in which direction the decision is evolving: collective mind in the sense of collective intentionality, group consciousness or group belief, or collective consciousness (as Durkheim conceived of)? Are there other alternatives - is pluralism or the �pluralistic mind' something like a code word of the evolution at the beginning of the twenty first century? Does the need of communication and argumentation, the essence of the language game compel the linguistically affluent person to understand herself as profoundly, even a priori interconnected with others? And what does the recent political history tell - the necessity of the incumbents to be interrelated to and by their party, in sequel of the constitutional framework and institutions, do they perform a new form of the corporated mind (in the sense of Hegel)? Enterprises, organizations and incorporations (in the economic sense), are they simply embodiments of the circuitive mind or, and even more, circuitive consciousness? The stream tries to find answers, positions, arguments and eventual solutions to these questions and issues. Contributions from the humanities including the arts are welcome, in addition sociology, psychology, even neuroscience and information theory. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, an Athens educational walking tour, and an one-day visit to Delphi.
